English Language Arts
We will be using a variety of trade books (fiction), various informational text resources (non-fiction), the MyView Literacy curriculum, and the Daily 5 program this year. Students will work independently, in teacher directed small groups, and as a whole class. The skills we will be working on this year focus on decoding, comprehension strategies, and fluency skills, and are in accordance with Common Core Oregon State Standards. www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RL/1/ Phonics will also be taught daily.
Writing
We will be using 6+1 Traits writing framework, along with the MyView Literacy curriculum, to focus on building specific skills in ideas, organization, convention, sentence fluency, and word choice. This year we will learn how to write narrative, opinion, and non-fiction pieces of writing. Writing conventions taught this year will include correct grade level use of grammar, punctuation, phonetic spelling, grade level sight word spelling, and capitalization.
Math
For math, we will be using the Bridges math curriculum, which aligns with the common core standards. It places a strong emphasis on hands on learning through games and manipulatives. Students will develop their math skills through instruction, investigation, and exploration. Units of study will include numbers 1-120, place value, addition/subtraction, geometry, data & graphs, measurement, time & money. More information can be found by clicking on the Bridges link.
SEL- Social Emotional Learning
CCCS uses a Social/Emotional curriculum called Lion's Quest. Students will discuss topics relating to personal and social development, and leadership and service through a variety of class activities.
Health
We will use the Great Body Shop curriculum. Units of study include nutrition, exercise, germs, emotions, and safety.
Science
In science we will learn about sound and light waves, life cycles, and the Earth's place in the universe. Students will be able to predict patterns of the sun and moon. We will also learn how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs, along with patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive. A variety of resources will be used to accomplish this. Oregon has adopted the Next Generation Science Standards and more about that can be found by clicking on the following link.
